Have you ever come across ENEX files while using Evernote? ENEX, short for "Evernote Export," is the file format used when you export notes from Evernote. This is particularly useful if you're moving your notes to some Evernote alternative. These files include all the details of your notes — images, attachments, titles, tags, and timestamps for when the notes were created and last updated. Why Use ENEX Files? There are several reasons why exporting your notes to an ENEX file could be beneficial: Migration: It allows you to transfer your notes into other applications smoothly. Backup: ENEX files make it easy to store backups of your notes either offsite or through a backup service you manage. Archiving: Keep older notes that you might need in the future but don't want to maintain in your active Evernote account. Conversion: You can convert the ENEX files into different formats like PDF or Markdown for other uses. Limitations of ENEX Files While ENEX files are handy for exporting data from Evernote, they have some limitations: Notebook Structure: ENEX files do not keep the original notebook structure. All notes are merged into one file without any organization. Note Links: Links between notes in Evernote will not work once exported because the links depend on Evernote's internal structure. Tag Hierarchy: Any hierarchical organization of tags in Evernote is not preserved, resulting in a flat list of tags. Note History: The export does not include the version history of your notes, meaning any previous versions of notes are lost. Detailed Structure of ENEX Files ENEX files are based on XML and adhere to the Evernote Export Document Type Declaration. You can find the full details of the specification on the Evernote website. However, keep in mind that the site describes the older version of the specification (version 3) used by the legacy versions of the app (version 6.x for Windows and 7.x for Mac). The latest EN version (10 and above) use version 4 of the specification. The ENEX file format has evolved slightly over different versions of Evernote: Evolution of ENEX File Specification Here's a brief history of the changes in the ENEX specification: Version 1 - Includes basic note elements such as title, content, creation and update dates, tags, note attributes, and resources. Version 2 - Introduced attributes related to tasks. Version 3 - Added attributes for reminders. Version 4 - Enhanced the features for tasks and reminders, reflecting improvements in newer Evernote versions. Converting ENEX Files to Other Formats Transforming ENEX files into other formats can be a bit technical but here are some methods: From ENEX to Markdown There is a command-line utility that can convert ENEX files to Markdown. It is open-source and can be downloaded from GitHub. You can use it to convert Evernote notes to files that can be imported in other apps or used by some CMS system like Jekyll. Another option to convert ENEX to MD is using Yarle. However it requires NodeJS, which can be more complicated for non-technical users. From Markdown to MS Word, RTF, and PDF Once your notes are in Markdown, you can convert them to MS Word, Rich Text Format, or PDF using the Pandoc converter. Sample .enex file If you're looking to see how ENEX files work or need a sample file for testing, you can download a sample ENEX file from the link below. This file contains a typical example of what you might find in an Evernote export, including note contents and associated metadata like titles and tags. Download sample ENEX file Conclusion The ENEX file format is essential for Evernote users who need to back up or transfer their notes. Despite some drawbacks, it remains a valuable tool for managing, saving, and migrating your important information across different platforms. For detailed guidance on migrating from Evernote using the ENEX format, please see our comprehensive Evernote Migration Guide. <![CDATA[How to export notebooks & notes out of Evernote]]> 2024-04-24T10:00:00-07:00 2024-05-28T10:00:00-07:00 https://www.myinfoapp.com/blog/export-evernote Evernote has been a favored note-taking app since its launch in 2008. However, due to numerous recent changes, many users are either switching to other solutions or considering such a move. Thinking about switching from Evernote or just want to back up your Evernote data? If the idea of transferring all your notes seems daunting, don't stress—this guide will help you go through the process of exporting from Evernote, step by step. Migration from Evernote step by step Prepare your notes for export Export all notes from Evernote Import your .ENEX file(s) Advanced export steps (optional) Final words Prepare your notes for export Evernote notebooks and notes can be exported easily. However, if you want to keep the internal links between notes or the hierarchy of your tags, you"ll need to do some extra preparation before exporting. Export all notes from Evernote Here's how to export your notes from Evernote to an .ENEX file. You can find full instructions how to do it the Evernote help files, but here are the quick steps: Make sure you have the Evernote desktop app installed. This process won't work with the web version, because it does not support notes export. Go to the Notebooks screen. Click on More actions (••• icon) and choose Export Notebook... Select ENEX as the file format. Choose a location for your exported .enex file and click Export. Repeat these steps for each notebook you have. I've also included a video below to guide you through each step: Import your .ENEX file(s) The following are instructions how import your newly exported .ENEX file(s) in MyInfo. Choose File > Import. Import dialog will appear. Select Evernote .ENEX Notebook in the list and click OK. In the Open dialog that will appear find your .enex file and select it. Click Open and wait for the import to complete. If you have more .ENEX files, you can repeat the steps with each of them. What will be imported? MyInfo has one of the most complete importers for Evernote. It will import the following from your .ENEX files: rich formatting (fonts, sizes, bold, italic, lists, headings, colors) links (including internal links) tasks images tables attachments (Word, Excel, PDFs and other files) tags (including nested tags) Advanced export steps (optional) The following steps are required only if you use internal note links or nested tags in Evernote: Retain internal links If you're switching from Evernote to a new note-taking app and you've got a lot of linked notes, here's a useful tip: Create a "Table of Contents" note in Evernote. This note should list all your notes, including their titles and links. This is important because when you move your notes to a new app, the ENEX file format used for exporting from Evernote doesn't always keep the note titles and links matching up correctly. By having a "Table of Contents", you help the new app's importer to properly import link to other notes in your notebook. MyInfo and other compatible apps support this kind of TOC notes, so when you import the ENEX file, your internal links will continue to work there. To create a TOC note in Evernote, before you export to ENEX: Select all notes. Click on the Create Table of Contents Note button. If your version of Evernote does not include this button, you can try this alternative: Select all notes. Right click on them and select Copy Internal Links. Paste the links in a new note called "Table of Contents" or "index". Preserve tag hierarchy Evernote export does not keep the tag hierarchy. To keep your tag hierarchy, you can "flatten" tags by separating them with "/". For example, if you have the following tag structure in EN: ParentTag ChildTag In order to see tags properly nested in MyInfo and other compatible apps: Right-click on the ChildTag. Select Rename. Rename it to ParentTag/ChildTag. Repeat these steps for all child tags in Evernote. Final words You have just learned how to move your notes out of Evernote into a new app. There are multiple note taking apps that can import your .ENEX files. However, if you use Windows, we recommend MyInfo - a full featured Evernote alternative for Windows. <![CDATA[Download TreePad]]> 2024-04-09T10:00:00-07:00 2024-06-27T10:00:00-07:00 https://www.myinfoapp.com/blog/download-treepad Are you looking for a working trial version of TreePad or for the free TreePad Lite installer? This update brings Markdown import support, elevates the Evernote ENEX import from experimental status, and adds different general usability improvements. Notably, links within notes are now distinctively colored, and there's greater flexibility in managing note perspectives and selections. MyInfo 8.4 is designed to make your information management even more efficient and enjoyable. Markdown Import MyInfo 8.4 features full Markdown import support. You can insert Markdown files in the text editor, create notes from Markdown files and import folders containing Markdown files. MyInfo will try to preserve most of the formatting from your Markdown files. That includes headings, font effects, lists, links, tasks, and even tables and pictures! Evernote ENEX Import The Evernote ENEX import feature is now officially out of the experimental phase! We've also added support for "Table of Contents" note to help you import internal links better. Internal Links Formatting Speaking of internal links, they now boast their own unique text style, "Link - Internal", which displays them in green to distinguish them from external links. This visual cue helps you quickly identify links to other notes at a glance. If you prefer all links to look the same, you can easily turn this off. Just head to Format > Styles > Link - Internal > Font, and select Auto as the link color. Improvements & Bug Fixes Switching between list perspectives or editing notes in them no longer collapses perspective groups. Now you can select which specific section to use for clipped notes. Automatic app updates now require no user interaction. Inserting HTML file with images in the text editor was not showing the imported images right away. Typing custom font size in the toolbar control now works properly. Setting custom keyboard shortcuts was not working in the last version. Notes created using the @ command are created as subnotes when in tree section. You can turn that off in Editing options. All Changes See the full list of changes in MyInfo 8.4 How do I get it? But, many users are now finding it frustrating. They face more and more challenges while using it. Evernote is no longer the note taking app that it was in the past. Even loyal fans of the app are now worried about the app's future. Evernote ownership changed, which led to a sting of price increases. The free version of the app is now limited to only 50 notes. Thankfully, there's a silver lining. The tech world is bustling with great alternatives to Evernote. They offer new and efficient ways to keep life organized. They are ready to meet your note-taking needs. Here are some apps that are better than Evernote. Why People Are Ditching Evernote? Before we start, let's see why people are searching for Evernote alternatives in 2024: Stalled Development - People are leaving Evernote because it has stopped evolving. It used to be a leader in note-taking apps, but now, it seems stuck. New features are rare, and the excitement of innovation is gone. Users feel like they're missing out on the latest tech and improvements found in other apps similar to Evernote. Price Increases - Recent Evernote's price hike is pushing people away. Paying 180 dollars a year for a personal account or 220 a year for a professional one feels too steep for many. Cheaper or free Evernote alternatives offer similar or better services. So, it's hard to justify the expense. New Owners' Vision - Evernote owners changed. This brought a shift in app's vision. It now focuses on AI and data use. This change sparked privacy concerns. Evernote users worry about how their notes and data get used. They fear a privacy invasion. This unease is leading users to seek safer notes app options. No Longer Usable Free Plan - Evernote's decision to limit new free accounts to only 50 notes and a single notebook is a deal-breaker for many. It used to be an easy tool for everyone. But, with the new limits, it's no longer an attractive free option. This limitation pushes people to look for other note-taking apps. Requires Microsoft account. Microsoft OneNote is a note taking application, which is part of Microsoft Office. It is one of the better Evernote alternatives. OneNote supports digital pen and ink, making it ideal for users who prefer handwritten notes. OneNote boasts a powerful visual text editor, packed with features like images, tables, links, checklists, and attachments. If you're already using Microsoft products, its connection with Microsoft Outlook is a big bonus. Rich Media Support: insert audio recordings, voice memo, and math equations. Ink Support: OneNote offers excellent digital ink support, if that is something that you need. Cons Awkward Tagging: tags in OneNote are conceptually different than tags in Evernote. They also lack hierarchy. There's a tool from Microsoft that's supposed to help with this, but Microsoft hasn't updated it in a while and it does not work with the new Evernote versions. There are also other tools made by different developers that can do the job, but I haven't tried them out. Verdict Microsoft OneNote is a decent Evernote alternative. Cross-Platform: Simplenote has clients for all major platforms. Cons No Task Management. No Attachments. No Import. Basic Formatting: no tables, limited text formatting. No Web Clipping Tool: that makes it less convenient for research and saving online content. Migration Simplenote doesn't let you import notes from Evernote. It also lacks many of Evernote's advanced features. So, you'd lose lots of your stuff (like fancy text styles, attached files, and more) if you just copy and paste your notes. MyInfo 8 is packed with new features and improvements that will make organizing your life easier and more efficient than ever before. Here are the highlights of this release: Dark Mode One of the most frequently requested new features for MyInfo was the dark mode. Finally, the wait is over and MyInfo 8 includes a new and shining dark theme! It is not only beautiful looking, but also reduces eye strain, improves readability, and offers higher contrast, allowing you to work longer with less fatigue. Markdown-style Shortcuts MyInfo 8 now supports markdown-style shortcuts that allow you to format text as you type. This new feature enables you to apply formatting options quickly and efficiently, without the need for manual formatting or using the toolbar. For example, you can use double asterisks to indicate bold text, or underscores for italics. These shortcuts make formatting text easier and more intuitive, allowing you to focus on the content rather than formatting. Nested Tags MyInfo 8 now supports nested tags, a new feature that enables users to organize their notes in a more detailed and hierarchical way. With nested tags, users can create tags within tags, allowing for more specific categorization of notes. For example, a user can create a "recipes" tag and nest sub-tags like "desserts", "entrees", and "vegetarian." This feature enables you to create a detailed and comprehensive organizational structure that reflects the complexity of your notes. Code Snippets With MyInfo 8, you can now insert code snippets directly into your notes, which is especially beneficial if you work with programming languages or need to document code-related tasks. 42 of the most popular programming languages are supported. Note Structure Pane If you work with long documents, you will appreciate the new note structure pane. It will help you navigate them more easily. It creates a map of all note headings, giving you a better overview of note content. Go to Anything Say "Goodbye" Go To Note, and "Hello" Go To Anything! This was the winner of the popular vote for a bonus feature in MyInfo 8 - the new and shiny Go to Anything command. It will probably become your preferred way to move around in your notebooks, giving you instant access to open notebooks, sections, perspectives, tags, and notes. Async Backup One of the few complains of MyInfo 7 was that its backup feature could interfere with regular app usage. This issue has been resolved in MyInfo 8 with the implementation of asynchronous backup. This means that you can now work uninterrupted, while their data is being backed up seamlessly in the background. We are introducing new, more fair and more straightforward terms for MyInfo updates for both you and us as a company. TLDR You buy MyInfo once and own it forever. Your copy will never expire or deactivate. You get 12 months of major and minor updates with your purchase. After that you can extend your updates yearly. If you already own MyInfo 7, these changes do not affect you. New terms are effective from June 1, 2022. What changed? Traditionally, MyInfo had free minor updates and paid major updates. With the new licensing scheme, you get 12 months of free minor updates and major upgrades when you buy MyInfo license. After that you can still get new updates by purchasing a new year of updates. If you decide to stop receiving new updates, you can still use the latest MyInfo version that was available at the time your free updates expired. After that, you can renew your updates at any moment by purchasing additional year of updates. Is MyInfo now a subscription-based software? No, MyInfo is still is a perpetual-license software. Once you buy MyInfo, your license never expires. We are only changing the way you get new updates. Why are we making these changes? Our old updates policy was that you get minor updates for free, but major updates were paid. That stalled MyInfo development. It forced us to delay some major new features for the paid major updates. We hate to do that. Now with the new way we sell MyInfo, we can release major new features the moment they are done! We think we have found a great balance: you own your app forever for a one-time fee, and we get the opportunity to constantly improve the application for people who love getting the latest features. What will be MyInfo price then? MyInfo still costs $99 (USD). This includes a full year of free updates. After these 12 months of free updates are over, you can purchase additional year of updates for $49 (USD). I purchased MyInfo in the past. What happens to my updates of MyInfo? If you purchased MyInfo 7 before June 1, 2022, you will still get all MyInfo 7.x updates free of charge, no matter when they are released. You will use the new update terms once we release MyInfo 8 and only if you decide to upgrade to it. <![CDATA[The best note taking apps for Windows in 2024]]> 2021-12-04T10:00:00-08:00 2024-03-14T10:00:00-07:00 https://www.myinfoapp.com/blog/best-note-taking-apps-windows The digital age has transformed note-taking. Their versatility makes them essential in our digital world, where being efficient and accessible matters most. What are the essential features of the best note-taking software? When searching for the ideal note-taking software for Windows, there are several key features to consider that will enhance your experience and productivity. Robust text editor - the heart of any note-taking app is its text editor. A top-notch editor is both user-friendly and feature-rich, offering options for rich formatting, including various fonts and colors. It should also support lists, tables, images, and hyperlinks to enhance the note-taking process. Tagging system - efficient organization of notes is crucial. The ability to perform simple text searches and complex Boolean queries is a significant benefit, enabling quick and precise location of information within your notes. What exactly is a personal information manager (PIM)? A personal information manager (PIM) is a software for managing contacts, appointments, tasks, memos and other personal data. The term "personal information manager" may seem broad or ambiguous, often used interchangeably to refer to both the computer software and the device, also known as "personal digital assistant" or PDA (remember PalmPilot?). In this guide, our focus will be solely on the software aspect of PIMs. Varieties of personal information management apps Personal information manager apps come in many forms, ranging from simple to complex solutions. They might offer a single information management component or encompass a comprehensive suite of PIM components. PIM types: mobile vs desktop software PIM software solutions can be categorized based on their target platform in two distinct groups. Mobile personal information manager Mobile devices, today's PDA, offer a basic set of PIM functionalities. Both Android and iOS devices allow for managing phone numbers, checking emails, creating todo lists, managing appointments, and setting reminders. Their simplicity is a double-edged sword. While effective for basic tasks, they fall short in handling more complex personal information management needs, for which a robust desktop-based personal information management software is ideal. Desktop personal information manager For all major computer platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) there are powerful PIM tools available. We will delve into the details of these desktop apps and review what computer-based personal information managers are capable of. What is a personal information manager used for? A Personal Information Manager (PIM) is a digital tool designed to organize and simplify the management of personal information and daily tasks. It serves as a centralized platform for storing and accessing various types of personal data, including contacts, scheduled meetings, email correspondence, personal notes, and task checklists. Users primarily utilize PIMs to enhance productivity and efficiency in their personal and professional lives. By consolidating different streams of information into one interface, it reduces the time and effort spent searching for specific details across multiple applications. Additionally, PIMs often come with features like calendar integration, reminder systems, and task prioritization, which help users manage their time more effectively. This versatility makes PIMs invaluable for individuals seeking a structured approach to managing their daily activities and information overload. Which are the key features of effective personal information managers? According to Wikipedia a personal information manager typically includes: Bookmark manager - for storing web site URLs Calendar - for managing appointments & daily agenda Contacts - optional, since smartphones normally handle that Email client - optional, since email clients are ubiquitous now Forms - for items that require a predefined template Notes - for any kind of free-text information Outliner - for drafting ideas & organizing hierarchical data items Reminders - for appointments & to-dos Task manager - for managing tasks and todo lists Why do you need a personal information manager app? Everyone has unique personal information management needs, but commonly, we all seek to organize: Anniversaries, events & key dates Diverse collections/databases (music, movies, books) Diaries/Journals Email and instant message archives Itineraries & checklists Legal documents Lists (places to go, culinary experiments) Medical records Personal notes Passwords Project management resources Recipes Reference materials Web snippets & bookmarks What makes the perfect personal information manager software? Keeping in mind that we are talking about desktop-based personal information managers, these feature are most important for a quality PIM app: User-friendly interface - the personal information manager is a tool that you use daily, so it needs a modern and clean user interface. Text editor - since we are going to write down all kinds of free-text information, we need a decent text editor with rich text formatting, support for pictures, tables, and file attachments. Search - finding your information is critical in a personal information manager app. You should have access to powerful searching functionality, including both simple searches and boolean expression queries. Strong linking - you should be able to interlink different data items in the application for better and faster navigation. Views - it should be possible to display and order your data by different criteria, suitable for various contexts. Encryption - if you store sensitive personal information, you should be able to password-protect it. Portability & synchronization - your work may require that you travel a lot and use different computers. Having your data on a USB thumb-drive can be a lifesaver. Alternatively, you may use some sort of synchronization service to keep the same data on different devices. Import & Export - probably you already have a vast amount of personal information stored in other applications, databases or as files & folders on your computer. You should be able to move it to your personal information manager, but also to be able to move it out, if the need arises. Tagging and metadata - another tool for making navigating and finding your stuff better is to be able to label the different data items with tags, categories and other attributes. Forms & Templates - required for managing collections. Web clipper - makes collecting web snippets and bookmarks much easier. Customization - a good PIM program is a place where you will spend a lot of time. You should be able to change its layout and appearance to match your style and preferences. Best personal organizer tools While there are many PIM apps out there, we've selected three that are the best for their respective platforms. Please note that we've reviewed only computer applications, so no mobile phone apps are in the list. MyInfo (Windows) This is a desktop-based personal information manager for Windows. It offers powerful text editor with support for rich formatting, images, and tables. It offers an impressive full-text search (supporting also advanced search syntax), the files can be password-protected, and this organizer app can be installed on a portable drive. It has a great user interface for navigating between your items, has strong linking functions, and imports and exports many different file formats. DevonThink (Mac) If you are using Mac rather than Windows, then we recommend you DevonThink. It allows you to organize files from different application and edit most of them directly in DevonThink, supports smart saved searches and you can assign reminders to the different data items. Just as MyInfo, it offers strong tagging feature. Best personal information managers for 2024 MyInfo (best personal information manager for Windows) DevonThink (best personal information manager for Mac) Evolution (best PIM for Linux) Conclusion In conclusion, if you are looking for personal information manager for Windows then definitely try MyInfo. It's fast, it's responsive, it's feature complete, and it's simple to use. If you are Mac person, on the other hand, then give DevonThink a try. <![CDATA[Personal knowledge base software (Ultimate Guide 2024)]]> 2021-09-08T12:00:00-07:00 2024-01-12T12:00:00-08:00 https://www.myinfoapp.com/blog/ultimate-personal-knowledge-base-guide In today's information-rich world, harnessing the power of a personal knowledge base is crucial for individuals seeking to effectively manage their intellectual assets. Distinct from public databases or organizational systems, a PKB focuses on personal intellectual content, reflecting your specific interests and expertise. The concept of personal knowledge bases has evolved significantly since its initial mention in the 1980s. Prominent figures like Stephen Davies have contributed to its prominence in academic circles. However, the earliest example of such system was the hypothetical "Memex" machine described by Vannevar Bush in his prophetic article "As We May Think" back in 1945 in the Atlantic Monthly. In fact, one can argue that the first example of such system are Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks, which he maintained meticulously and daily, making continual observations of the world around him. What are the benefits of a personal knowledge management system? Opting for an effective personal knowledge management system offers numerous advantages: Knowledge generation and formulation - a good personal knowledge management tool helps you remember thoughts and ideas, explore them, and gain new understanding and insight. A good PKB software empowers you to find and to make new connections between already collected knowledge items thus helping grow your knowledge. Knowledge capture - it enables you to capture knowledge before it elusively disappears. How many times you see something that you deem as important, but you do not store it on time and you just forget about it afterwards? And even when you bookmark an important web page, it may just disappear. Having it stored locally could be very helpful. Knowledge organization - having your knowledge organized in a meaningful way helps you tremendously in finding relevant bits when you need them. Knowledge management and retrieval - perhaps the most critical aspect of a personal knowledge base is the ability to store knowledge permanently and accessible, ready to be retrieved at any time later. Knowledge is hard to acquire, and it is very important to have it stored in a durable system. Think of it as your second brain. Integrating heterogeneous sources - our knowledge comes from a variety of sources. Thus, we need a tool that makes possible storing and organizing any type of knowledge in a single place. Having all your personal knowledge in a single place allows you to review it regularly and to remember it easier. Knowledge independence - currently, you may have access to a vast pool of organizational knowledge, but once you leave a company, it is no longer available to you. You can use a personal knowledge base software to keep the knowledge relevant to you and to your fields of expertise even when you are no longer part of that organization. How does personal knowledge base software work? Effective personal knowledge base software operates on the principle of "knowledge elements", varying in granularity and content across different systems. These elements form the foundation of your personal knowledge architecture, enabling you to align them with your mental model. From simple phrases to complex text notes and links to external sources, these elements are organized in various structures like hierarchies, categories, or interlinked systems. What makes a good personal knowledge management software? An ideal tool for personal knowledge management requires a certain set of features: Clean, minimalist look - the PKB app should be user-friendly, and the user interface should be familiar to you from other applications that you already use. Text editor - continuing with the previous feature, you should be looking for tools that offer visual text editing (also known as WYSIWYG). While some people prefer using just plain text or even mark-up languages like Markdown, we recommend that you use a text editor with rich formatting and pictures in order to make your knowledge items more expressive. Web clipping - having a strong web clipper functionality is a must for any personal knowledge base app. The Web is our main source of information, so we need a way to store links, snippets (with source link) or complete copies of relevant web pages. Bi-directional linking or backlinks - this is an indispensable feature that helps us quickly see relationships between our knowledge items and create new connections between them. It gives you the power of a personal wiki. Full-text search - an ideal PKB solution needs a powerful search function for finding your knowledge. If you are power user, look for solutions that offer advanced search syntax, where you can specify in which parts of the items to search and what kind of items to find. Metadata - if you want to give more structure to your knowledge base, your tool needs strong metadata and tagging capabilities (tags), which allow you to better classify your knowledge elements, making them easier for grouping and sorting. Portability - your work may require that you travel a lot and use different computers. Having your personal knowledge base content stored on a USB drive or shared on a network could be a lifesaver. Best personal knowledge base tools While there are many personal knowledge base apps available, most of them have either cumbersome and hard-to-use interface and/or use Markdown rather than a visual text editor. That is why we recommend just a single tool that is easy to install and to use. MyInfo This is a desktop-based personal knowledge base software for Windows. It has WYSIWYG text editor with strong support for rich formatting, images, and tables. MyInfo offers an impressive full-text search (supporting also advanced search syntax), your files can be password-protected, and the app can be installed on a portable drive. It has a great table of contents for navigating between your knowledge items, strong linking functions and imports/exports many different file formats. In conclusion, if you use Windows then definitely give MyInfo a try. <![CDATA[MyInfo 7.2 is here]]> 2021-07-10T01:00:00-07:00 2021-07-10T01:00:00-07:00 https://www.myinfoapp.com/blog/myinfo-7-2-is-here MyInfo 7.2 is here! Note Backlinks Even though bi-directional note linking is not a new concept, it is getting quite a momentum right now. MyInfo is not falling behind! Now with MyInfo 7.2, you can easily see how many notes have references to the current note and explore them in depth. MyInfo not only lists the notes that link to the current note, but also gives you a quick access to all the links that are used with their respective captions. Clicking on a link goes to the exact spot in the note where the reference is. This makes MyInfo even better suited as a personal wiki. Native .docx File Support Microsoft Word files are now first-class citizen in MyInfo! You can insert, import, and export notes from and to .docx files without any additional software. Default Note Templates Having your carefully hand-crafted note templates is nice, but it is not nice if you want to use them all the time and MyInfo always uses the default Note template instead. To makes things easier, now you can select default note templates for your notebook or for a separate section. So if you have a section for tasks, just set the Task template and pressing Enter in the note list will now produce a proper task instead of a plain note. Whether you're a student, a professional, or just seeking better organization, the right personal wiki software can transform the way you manage information. Due to its free-form nature, setting up a personal wiki requires minimal effort and it's straightforward to maintain and update with new information. This guide aims to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the best personal wiki software options available, showcasing their key features, benefits, and how they can improve the way you capture, store, and retrieve information. Learn about personal wiki What is a wiki? What are the different types of wikis? What is desktop wiki? Why do you need a personal wiki? What are the requirements for the best personal wiki software? How to make a personal wiki? Best personal wiki software picks for 2024 What is a Wiki? Wikis, originating from the Hawaiian word for "quick", are collaborative hypertext publications accessible via a web browser. They can contain multiple pages dedicated to different subjects. While Wikipedia is the most renowned example, the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb (now archived), was created in 1995 by Ward Cunningham. Wikis differ from the traditional content management systems because the pages don't have specific owner, and in most cases, everybody is free to create and edit pages. This openness fosters a sense of community among users. It allows for rapid content development and knowledge sharing. Mistakes can be quickly corrected, and new information added seamlessly. The collective effort ensures wikis remain up-to-date and relevant. What are the different types of wikis? External wiki External or public wikis are accessible online and function as knowledge hubs on various topics. Wikipedia and WikiTravel, both using MediaWiki open-source wiki software, are prominent examples. These platforms allow users to contribute content, edit existing pages, and share insights on a wide range of subjects, fostering a collaborative information-sharing environment. Internal wiki Internal (or private) wikis are confined to specific teams or entire companies. They're pivotal for managing a company's internal knowledge base, including processes, guidelines, and policies. Such company wiki fosters a collaborative environment, allowing for the continuous updating and sharing of company knowledge among team members. Private wiki software ensures this information remains secure and accessible only to authorized personnel, enhancing confidentiality. Personal wiki Personal wikis, unlike public and private variants, are tailored for individual use. Technically, personal wikis often differ from standard wikis. In comparison to the standard wiki, personal wiki has a single owner and user - you. They contain personally relevant information and are typically not intended for public access. This shifts the technical needs for personal wiki engines - you don't require a public web server and sometimes, no server at all! Desktop wiki software, which operates as a standalone, local, and often offline wiki, is ideal for these scenarios. Thus, a personal wiki is always a single-user wiki. When installed on your computer, it's also a desktop and local wiki. Often, it's an offline wiki, as the data is stored on your system, eliminating the need for internet access. Some versions can be installed on portable devices like USB drives, offering a portable wiki solution. What is desktop wiki? A desktop wiki software is a type of application designed to serve as a single source of truth. It allows users to create, organize, and manage a collection of interlinked notes or documents on their desktop computer, much like an offline, personal Wikipedia. These applications enable individuals to structure their information in a flexible and dynamic way, supporting links between pages, tagging, and sometimes even multimedia content. Desktop wiki tools are particularly useful for personal knowledge management, project documentation, research, and learning purposes, as they help in organizing information in a non-linear fashion. Personal wiki glossary local wiki - data stored on your computer, not in the cloud (see also offline wiki) offline wiki - operates without Internet access (see also local wiki) portable wiki - installed on a portable drive for mobility single-user wiki - exclusively for a single owner and user standalone wiki software - another term for offline desktop wiki software Why do you need a personal wiki? Personal wikis serve various purposes: Empty your head - create an external brain for yourself. Write down everything that is keeping your mind busy. Note-taking - use it as a flexible note-taking app. Start a new page for each idea in your personal wiki notebook. Personal knowledge base - do often forget how to do certain things? Write down the exact steps for future reference. Client management - create your own customer relationship management system by writing down client details, meeting notes, and important dates. Project management - keep all the nifty details about your next project in one place. Research - consolidate research notes and references in one place. Free form database - wondering how to keep track of your collections? The personal wiki can be your friend here.. What are the requirements for the best personal wiki software? While public wikis need strong collaborative features and comprehensive page history, and revisions, personal wikis have different requirements. Ease of use and tools to organize pages are the top priority here. Ease of installation - no need to dwell on this one. Best personal wikis should not require installing additional software or a server. They should be usable even by non technical users. Text editor - traditional wikis often require writing pages in a special markup like Wikitext or Markdown. However, for a personal wiki, you should be looking for tools that offer visual text editing (also known as WYSIWYG - what you see is what you get). It makes writing easier and faster, because it is not prone to errors and you see your changes instantly. Rich text formatting - whether you prefer plain texts or beautifully formatted pages depends on your needs and preferences. That will determine how advanced the formatting features of the text editor should be. However, almost everybody needs two types of content to have a fully functioning wiki. Strong image support for visual representation of ideas, places, and people and tools for creating tables for structured data. Bi-directional linking or backlinks - you should be able to quickly see all connected pages and navigate between them easily. They essentially link related wiki pages. Full-text search - all wikis need a powerful search function for finding your information. If you are power user, look for engines that offer advanced search syntax, where you can specify in which parts of the page to search and what kind of pages to find. Page revisions - keeping track of changes to your pages is not as important as in a public wiki but could be helpful in some cases. Encryption - it is good to have some form of password-protection, if your wiki contains sensitive private information and confidential data. Portable wiki - your work may require that you travel a lot and use different computers. Then having your wiki on a USB drive can be a lifesaver. Table of contents - it is useful to have a list of all wiki pages for easier navigation. Some personal wikis also allow for having your pages in a hierarchy, not just in a flat list. Import - probably you already have much of the data for your personal wiki available on your computer in the form of documents, spreadsheets, and PDFs. In that case having strong import capabilities is a must for jump-starting your wiki. Offline wiki - this is strictly optional, depending on your preference, but in some cases you want your wiki to be independent of Internet access, especially if you are security conscious or on the go How to make a personal wiki? It was a popular tool due to its mix of an organizer, database, and word processor capabilities. It also offered portable and free versions. TreePad was available in different editions ranging from free (TreePad Lite and TreePad Viewer), for personal use (TreePad Plus and TreePad Safe) and for business use (TreePad Business and TreePad X Enterprise). History TreePad was created by Henk Hagedoorn from the software development company Freebyte (Freebyte Software Engineering), based in Almere, Netherlands. It was actively developed from 1995 until the middle of 2019. Since August 2019, the app website (treepad.com) was down until February 2020, when it was purchased by another non-software related company. The last app updates were published on February 5, 2018. Since then, the software is no longer maintained and there is no customer support for it. There is no official information why the web site ceased to exist and what happened to the company that was developing the application. However, according to a person, who claims that she is the sister of the developer, Henk Hagedoorn passed away. This information was published as a comment by the user Elisa5555 (Elisa Hagedoorn) at Alternativeto.net Compatibility & Availability Despite the fact that Freebyte no longer maintains TreePad, existing versions of the organizer are generally still working properly under Windows 10 and older OS versions. Because it was last updated before Windows 11, it is unknown whether TreePad is compatible with this new version of Windows. Even though original TreePad's website is dead, you can still download TreePad installers (free and trial versions) and you can download portable version of TreePad Lite at PortableFreeware.com. TreePad Alternative If you are looking for modern personal information manager replacement for TreePad, you may take a look at MyInfo. It is an actively developed and extremely popular TreePad alternative for Windows (compatible with Windows 11). It offers native import for .hjt files and similar functionality to all TreePad editions* * - .hjt is the extension for the file format that TreePad used until version 7. If you have files using the newer .tpd file format, you may need to export them to .hjt first.
